To Protect the Green Home,

To Build the Harmonious Society

——Focusing on the Classification of Refuse from My View Point

Shanghai Jiaotong University

School of Environmental Science and Engineering

Chen Weidong

The solid waste is the resources put at a wrong place. So the collection is extremely necessary. The separate collection is the way of minimization of discarded material, as well as the reduction, detoxification and reclamation of the refuse. This will achieve the 3RReduction, Reuse, Recycleeconomical mode.

International background:

Sweden——When people dump trash, they throw glass bottles into big green iron trunk, batteries into big red pin bucket of the similar shape and discarded ironware into specific container. Waste newspapers are bundled for transportation regularly.

Canada——In parks there lie several kinds of bullet-shaped and blue-colored rubber buckets which are used for collection of paper, cans and glass bottles respectively.

Britain——There are 26 Recycle Centers in London. These centers have trash cans of definite purpose for separate collection of newspapers, shabby clothes, glass bottles and iron tins, etc.

Domestic background:

The Pudong Yuqiao Refuse Incineration Power Plant with the investment of 670 million RMB is the first modem domestic refuse incineration power plantwhich can daily dispose a thousand ton of refuse. After the completion of it, separate collection and disposal of refuse is comprehensive implemented in Pudong New District. Later, with the completion of other large scale refuse disposal facilities like Jiangqiao and Minhang refuse incineration power plants, Shanghai’s capacity of disposal of classificated refuse is greatly enhanced. As a result, all these have improved the efficiency and made some accomplishments. But to be a modern environmentally friendly municipality, Shanghai still has a long way to go and a heavy responsibility to shoulder.

Wandering in Shanghai Jiaotong University (SJTU), you can find that there are some trash cans designed for separate collection of refuse. These trash cans classify the refuse into three categories: recoverable refuse, non-recoverable refuse and harmful refuse. The students in SJTU generally have the sense of environmental protection, so they can dump trash into the right container according to the classification instructions.

At the time I stood by the trash cans marked “protect the environment, beautify the campus”, my thoughts drifted to the refuse collection trunks in the front of our dormitory building. A question rose in my mind: “why is the refuse of our dormitory not collected separately?”

As a member of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering (SESE) Youth Volunteer Service Team, I deeply believed that we should stand out to do something in our power to protect our campus environment right now. After discussion with our captain, the team finally made a decision of carrying out the plan that we set the D-18 dormitory building as the experiment unit of separate collection of refuse.

The first step: plan and prepare —— We consulted our teacher expert in the treatment and disposal of solid waste to make proper classification measure. Based on the full consideration of the international scientific classification principle and the situation of our campus life, we classified the refuse into five categories:

Paper refuse: mainly includes newspapers, magazines, books, etc.

Bottle refuse: mainly includes cans, bottles, etc.

Plastic refuse: mainly includes plastic bags, plastic wrappage, lunch boxes, toothbrushes, etc (plastic bottles are included in the plastic refuse).

Harmful refuse: includes batteries, bulbs, pills, containers for poisonous liquid, etc.

Organic combustible refuse: includes most refuse of daily life (also can be considered as refuse other than those above).

Approved by the league committee and the dormitory community, the program got some support and help. The experiment unit of separate collection of refuse came forth.

The second step: publicity and mobilization —— We contacted the guide teacher of campus living, the monitors of the building and its six storeys. Through them we introduced this program and publicized the idea of separate collection and the plan of the implementation to all the students in D-18 building. At the meantime, we established a supervision mechanism. The environmental protection is a career that needs everyone to take part in. The students in D-18 building didn’t ignore or reject the program just because of judging it as a troublesome bug. So as to ensure the implementation and operation of the experiment unit, they all expressed their willing of following the instructions to classify the refuse and collect it separately.

The third step: implementation and operation —— The poster was put up. The classificated trash cans were brought into the building. Students began to dump trash separately. The procedures of separate collection of refuse were implemented. In one-month experience time, the program was operated in regular order and it made some accomplishments. The most important achievement was that an entirely new mode was formed. Students consciously classify; whole campus supervises; refuse disposal station reclaim. This mode made the separate collection and disposal of dormitory refuse systemic, mechanical and normative.

The forth step: summarization and elevation —— In the end of this term, the program of separate collection of refuse was over. The Youth Volunteer Service Team concluded the accomplishments and problems in the experiment unit in time and prepared for popularization of classification of refuse in dormitories of whole campus.

While standing in the front of the trash cans for classificated refuse, I was recalling the overall process of the experiment unit of separate collection of refuse in this term. Suddenly I heard a dialogue rearward:

“My mobile phone sucks. I don’t need it any more. ”

“Just throw it away. It’s worthless.”

Throw it away, away. Throw it where, where? This question rose in my mind and stuck me.

Electronic refuse, a new phrase flashed. With the fast development of the societal economy, the new electronic products replace the older generation faster and faster. Electronic refuse appears in campus and has a fierce trend. And then, where should it be put?

Focusing on the classification of refuse from my view point, I find the way stretches endless ahead and I will seek from head to foot…

Protect the Green Homeland, Construct the Harmonious Society

——From Excessive Consumption to Global Warming

1Modern Youth’s Consumerism

Strolling around the campus, you will be attracted by each fashion youth. They own different kinds of new electronics products, talking about the most popular network games. From them, you could feel the fashion. Certainly, mp3, mobile, computer are the symbol consumptions of university students. When the novel items or new products come out, a lot of students spend much money for them, just for ministering to vanity. I call the phenomena Modern Youth’s Consumerism.

Taking the mobile, which is widely used among students, for example, I have done a survey on “Have you bought a new mobile in the last one year and WHY?” this April. The survey carried out smoothly in 14 universities including Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Heilongjiang, Anhui, Zhejiang. 747 students participated in the survey. Among them, 30.1% have bought at least one new mobile in the last one year. However, just 34.7% of them buy a new mobile because their mobiles were lost or spoiled. Moreover, as the results showed below, the more advanced and higher consumption the city is, the higher the ratio of the amount of students who bought a new mobile, and contrarily the less the ratio of the amount of students who had to buy new mobiles.

Thus it can be seen, quite a number of students just buy things for pursuing fashion. However, in fact, the normal use life of a mobile is 3 to 5 years. The main function of the mobile is calling and sending messenger, but many youth buy new mobiles probably for their beautiful appearance, even just for a new ring tune.

On another occasion, for example, in an on-sale shopping mall, there are quite a lot of people doing shopping crazily. Those people usually buy goods because they are cheaper than before, but most of those things will be put aside and never used later. Although maybe no one could avoid doing such things, how much “substantial benefit” could the so-called “bargain” bring to people?

2. Indispensable problem of energy resource exhaust

The two concepts, “Direct Energy Consumption” and “Indirect Energy Consumption”, were put forward by Professor Jorgen Stig Norgard of Technical University of Denmark in 1980s. For instance, electrical power for household appliances and illumination, heat energy for warm oneself, the fuel for vehicle are Direct Energy Consumption; and the energy for production, transportation and sale are Indirect Energy Consumption.

The more goods bought and sold, the more indirect energy exhausted. From the view of consumer, most manufactured products will finally flow into the market places, so people spend more for indirect energy than for direct energy. Taking some statistic data of Korea for example, residents in Korea spent just 6.2% of their income for direct energy in 2000. However, 54% of GDP of Korea was consumed by private, most for indirect energy consumption.

Let’s do another simple but surprising counting. There is an energy exhaust analyse for fridge taken by some scientists. Every year, direct energy consumption of a fridge is 1854MJ, but it will consume 3484MJ of indirect consumption (including production, trade, transportation, disposal of rubbish and so on) in its whole life. If fridges’ length of life is 15 years, it will consume 1854348415≈2086MJ energy every year. And if it is used only for 5 years, it will consume 185434845≈2551MJ, 465MJ more than 15 years’. Therefore, the less time a product used, the more energy consumed. Going back to the example of mobile phone, we could conclude that more energy will be consumed by changing for a new mobile in one year than in three years. Please attention, we have not mentioned the direct pollution and harm to the environment caused by arsenic, chrome, lead, nickel, zinc, PBDEs and so on of batteries. We cannot image how the number will be, if we plus the energy and cost of harnessing those pollution.

People have realized to save direct energy consumption by turn off the lights when leaving, adjusting the temperature of air condition higher in summer, etc. But the most important thing is that we should realize the frequent change for new mobile, household appliances and clothes is indirect energy consumption, the amount of which could be very huge.

3. From the excessive consumption to global warming:

Why could not we ignore the problem of energy consumption? Because it `s directly related to global warming.

The data shows that the content of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased by 31% from the first industrial revolution; petroleum consumption is twice the amount of mining currently in the world; the first time one trillion barrels of petroleum was consumed by the whole world for 125 years, but at the current consumption rate, another one trillion barrels could only last for 30 years… Various results indicate that for industrial development and the improvement of living standards, the energy consumption by human has extremely exceeded the pressure which environment could endure, and the price human pay for the environment can not be counterbalanced simply by the rise of GDP. If one day, one and another city was submerged by the rising sea level, and one and another species disappeared as a result of environment changing, how can we maintain our green garden? How can we build the harmonious society? And how can human avoid the destiny of perdition?

In the film of An Inconvenient Truth, the vision of a large number of scientific analysis strongly shocked our souls also caused deep reflection. As global warming, the melting of ice causes food decrease, and forces the Antarctic penguins to go faraway to capture food; As global warming, the capital of Maldives, of which the maximum elevation only has two meters, will be submerged by the slight rising sea level; As global warming, 10% of all known plant species are on the verge of extinction; As global warming, drought will have a serious impact on agriculture, and malaria, scarlatina and other malignant infection will spread more easily ... Recent events have given a lesson to people : the El Nino phenomenon, the expansion of desertification, tsunamis, drought and other disasters occurred and the warm winter just past ... everyone is alarmed by the Earth's heat., which even triggered this year's World Environment Day topic : MELTING ICE.

If the world continues to get warm at the existing rate of warming, after 50 years, or 100 years, what the Earth would look like? The answer will lie in the action of every one of us.

4. Protect our homeland, let’s go!

Face to the undermining human environment, should we slow down the pace of development, or return to the traditional life that our ancestors lived harmoniously with nature? Of course not. Industry should be continued to develop, energy must be continued to consume, greenhouse gas must continue emission. However, we should consider using more energy at extremely important area that had to use. For those luxury, or excessive consumption, we should limit or even eliminate it.

Now we vigorously promote the cycled consumption, so that waste could be used as resources and no harm. However, in-depth thinking about this, in order to change the waste become available resources again, how many additional money need we spend , and how much the additional consumption of energy? Why not start from the source of production to "lose weight"? The less garbage produced, the less trouble.

First, we must emphasize social responsibility of enterprises, that is mean an enterprise should not regard maximizing its interest as the sole target, it should also consider the social benefits, and it should consider the impact of its production to human living environment. However, we should not only focus on enterprises to reduce emissions or waste discharge standards; Meanwhile, we can see that when the blind pursuit of fashion and over-consumption have become a universal phenomenon, vendors will design more attractive style to stimulate consumption. At this point, if some people with such consumption attitude change in time, that will help the whole community to reconsider the attitude of excessive pursuit of material calmly. If we can give full use to the existing goods, or make minor improvement, but not pursue fashion simply, then the whole community demand of new goods will be significantly reduced. From another perspective, if an environmentalist who advocates to eliminate the use of one-off chopsticks and one-off plastic bags, but at the same time he/she is a crazy shopper, then any of its sermons and thoughtful attitude of environmental issues seem to fade.

As the contemporary college students who decide the future development and human destiny, in order to build a harmonious society and the common homeland of humanity, environment protection in fact is very easy for us. When you have impulse to go shopping or admire the new things other people bought, you could calmly consider whether you really need it. If circumstances permit, you could be able to tell family members and close friends, that their conservation is not only virtue, but also do matter with the common destiny of mankind, the environment of children and grandchildren's survival. Through this simple thought and kind remind, you has taken a significant step forward to solve mankind's common environmental issues.

Finally, on behalf of all environmentalists, I would like to extend our most sincere gratitude to your efforts.

Now, I am president of the Students Council, my teammates and I are planning the 2007 6·5 Environment Day Activities titled “Consider the source of environmental protection, to march further in the harmony construction”

Wherever I go and do in the future, I will regard the environmental protection as my eternal responsibility.

To Safeguard Our Beautiful Environment,

 To Build a Harmonious Society

——Faced with the problem of global warming, what could we do

Global warming, a phrase that can’t be more familiar to the public, yet has brought us with it the hazardous results more than the stereotype that ‘the temperature keeps going up, and the sea level rising’

First let’s have a look at what the Global Warming has brought us

            1. In the summer of 2006, a historical drought calamity took place in Sichuan Province, in which the number of people involved reached as high as 21 million. The drought caused a direct economic loss of 8.04 billion RMB, among which was a agricultural loss of 5.95 billion RMB.

            2. An absolute unexpected hurricane attacked the South Atlantic

            3. Dengue and Malaria which had been thought extinct have been re-found in the South-East Asia

Then, let’s see what have been predicted by the authorized scientists

            1. By the year of 2030, the production of china’s 3 major products would have reduced by 5%~10%

            2. During the next 100 years, we could even expect to see trees grow in Antarctica

            3. The melting ice-layer of Greenland could cause a pause of the heat transfer of the ocean conveyor, which would lead European landscape to a new Ice Age within 10 years.

I am deeply shocked by these facts and predictions. Global Warming has become a great threaten to our beautiful environment, and forced us to the last straw and to revolt. However, how many of us have perceived it and are willing to contribute to the fight against it? It is a war, a war to safeguard our beautiful environment and to build a harmonious society. We should unite and achieve our goals.

As President of the Students Council of School of Environmental Science and Engineering, my colleagues and I have already been armed to teeth, and devoted ourselves to this war against Global Warming which concerns the existence of human being. We will do all that we could within the scope of our ability.

As a team, we are conceiving the 2007 6·5 Environment Day Activities, with the theme of “Consider the source of environmental protection, to march further in the harmony construction”. The whole campaign is consisted of 3 parts: Inside The Campus, Outside The Campus, and Across Eight Universities.

Inside The Campus

            1. Container for recycling the wasted leaflets and learning documents or files

Once a certain activity is approaching on campus, the leaflets are surely employed for propaganda. When the activity is coming to an end, you could see leaflets scattered everywhere.

In the period of examination, lots of students have to print lots of documents. And they usually choose to print on one single side for convenience. And then, after the exams, they just dump them with other wastes immediately. Both the leaflets and the documents are causing a great waste of paper. If we could manage to recycle and reuse them, and spread this activity across other schools, we could save large areas of forest. As we all know, the photosynthesis of trees could absorb the carbon dioxide.

            2. Campus propaganda of environmental protection

Our Students Council will make 10 pieces of boards with relative pictures to show the disastrous results of the Global Warming in order to attract more and more college students into this war against Global Warming through this kind of activities with interactions.

We will arrange some campaigns in the form of games to draw the attention of the students

We will hold a Knowledge Competition of Environmental protection in the campus to lead the students to a deeper level of understanding Global Warming

Outside The Campus

This part includes four sects: Nanjing Road, High School, Primary School, and Kindergarten

Through Nanjing Road, we will exhibit relative pictures on Global Warming, and ask the public questions about Global Warming in order to let them realize how serious the situation is now and encourage them to join with us in the fight against it.

In the high school, we will invite our honored Professor Wang to deliver a speech on Global Warming and the solutions. In this way, we hope that these college students-to-be could shoulder the responsibility to protect our Environment in the future.

In the primary school ,we will carry out the campaign in the form of showing pictures, giving lessons, and doing games with the students.

In the kindergarten, we will give the kids enlightening education with cartoons and opusculum

Eight Universities

We will unite FuDan University, TongJi University, East China Normal University, Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai Maritime University, Shanghai University of Electric Power to form an organic body and carry out a series of activities as the reaction upon the Global Warming.

Our eight universities will enter the communities to propagate the harm of Global Warming.

We will hold a meeting in which our eight universities could exchange our views on how to employ our major advantages in carrying out activities.

We will deliver a Cooperation Petition, to raise the public awareness on the fight against the Global Warming

What we are able to do is far from enough. Taking this opportunity , We are expecting efforts from all fields to fight against Global Warming, including efforts from the government, the media, the enterprises, and the universities.

Government:

Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth has won the Oscar for Best Documentary, and inspired a series of activities to fight against Global Warming across the whole world. This suggests the crucial role our government plays in guiding the public. The government should be the leader in the combat with Global Warming, with propaganda, legal, and administrative methods as its weapons.

Media

The media should give play to their advantages of propaganda and supervision. It should actively exposure the hazardous results brought by Global Warming and advocate the solutions against Global Warming. The media should also supervise the wrong doings and expose the unproper behaviors in time.

Enterprises

The waste releasing enterprise should improve their techniques to reduce the amount of the green gas released.

Other enterprises should contribute within their capability as well. For example, the architecture

industry should advocate to use the energy saving material.

Universities

While intensifying the education of environmental protection, the universities should actively further the research and development on energy saving material, energy saving electric equipments, and new technics that are friendly to the environment, to solve the environmental problems radically.

The general public

Use the electricity properly, and use energy saving electric equipments which could reduce the amount of coal used for producing electricity and the green house released to the environment.

Refuse using disposable chopsticks and in this way to save large areas of forests.

Less use of car , and more frequent use of the public transportation

It is a world-wide war against Global Warming. My teammates and I have already got full prepared for it. We will shoulder our responsibility to help more and more people to realize the Inconvenient Truth, and get more and more people involved in this combat against Global Warming. All the activities belong to the whole team.
